But the very best thing of all… there’s a COUNTER on this ball!

Hey now kids come gather round…

In the depths of the old toy bin on my parents’ patio, underneath the triple-length jump rope we used for a pool zip-line, and the old basketballs and tennis balls we used for extreme rounds of dodgeball and mishap games of, “Moooooooooom…!!!” I found my glorious, green, Skip It with counter.

I found my Skip It today!!!

I was so overjoyed. My little four-year-old cousin couldn’t possibly fathom why I was so ecstatic about a simple plastic orb attached to a semi-inflexible plastic leash, but his confusion was curtailed by his happiness that I was so happy.

So, for those new to the genius world of the Skip It, and for those who, like me, just LOVE our 90’s nostalgia, enjoy, and sing along.

The singers are so passionate about this toy! Must’ve be the most effective form of advertising back then.

The Skip It was actually a spin off (or a skip off hyuck hyuck) from the 1970s Lemon Twist. Soon the lemon- ball transformed into a brightly colored ball with matching plastic cord. In the early 1990s, the Skip It I fell in love with came to Toys R Us and Wal-Mart stores.

I don’t know what it was, but the Skip It was my favorite. Perhaps it’s the simplicity of the game. They aren’t too popular for purchasing through Amazon, and now they have this “Skip It Twister” BS that is NO WAY as fun as the O.G.

I mean, it might be okay, but those colors and the rubber grip circumnavigating the weight with counter mind you (it’s important, indeed) will always be queen.

Youbetcha, I’ll be Skip It-ing from now on. It was so simple, and I loved it so much! Especially when we could compare the skips we did with our friends.

The Battle, the War, the Mind!

Negative thoughts. We all have them or does everyone? Maybe just me? We all deal with them or at least try to, and we all suffer from them yeah I suppose if you’re that depressed…

Real twalk: Negative thinking is not so absurd! Duh! We all have multiple streams of thought in one pattern of neural connectedness, and sure, some of these are not-so-great and not-so-conducive to the success of what you’re trying to achieve. So what can you do?

EASY FIX COMIN RIIIIIIIIGHT UP!

Okay, you’re hanging with your friends, a cute guy walks up to you and makes eye contact with you. Gasp! Potential! Alas, he starts chatting with your friend…

Your mind: Yeah he’s hitting on her- the pretty one of us. But aren’t I pretty too? Aren’t I worthy of his attention? I guess I’m the ugly one, the ugly and overweight one. I’ll never be able to open up to a guy since they’re always not hitting on me, but my pretty friends surrounding me…

Blech! And yet… relevant. This is just one example of many that we all may face a few times in our lives. What to do about this reaction? It sounds silly hearing it as one string of depressed banter, but this monologue goes on for each of us in our own words and through our own perceptions.

When I practiced kendo and a new girl who I deemed, “better than me” at kendo came to the dojo or a tournament, my honestly and embarrassingly, immediate reaction was this flame of jealousy that ignited within my heart. I soon learned that this is a temporary feeling, and even if it may come involuntarily, I have the ability to add gasoline or water to this fire. I chose to douse it in water. I would purposefully go over to the girl and compliment her on her way awesome kendo abilities. This proved to be WAY more beneficial for my psyche and my kendo, and consequently my appearance in the dojo by the high-ranking senseis.

Keep in mind, our perceptions are not the honest truth. Sometimes, some of us, can and do perceive a situation and get a good read of  people, but in this teleplay, the perception is clouded by doubt, and very low esteem of oneself.

So here’s your easy fix:

1. Immediately say something GOOD about yourself, your situation, your uniqueness. (After your reel of poopoo talk runs out.)

2. Reaffirm this in your heart (remember it’s all your perception, so if you perceive something great, welp, yep.)

3. Continue saying good things toward your self. Fake it till you make it, on the inside. Say realistic things. Not like, “I am a beautiful princess.” A sense of cray cray entitlement may follow- don’t poison your awesome self! Just encourage yourself!

Repeat. Especially Step 1. Hey try this even BEFORE any negative talk. PROACTIVE actions baby!!!

What is your unique talent? The world is a system of checks and balances and it all evens out, so what is your thing no one else has?

How Fitness Bloggers Changed My Life

How Fitness Bloggers Changed My Life

Oh say about, 4 years ago, I came across a really bright and fun and dynamic workout one day on Pinterest. I clicked the link unaware of where the internet was leading me. It took me to the owner’s website, and lo and behold it was a BLOG! The airy look of the site, and happy-go-lucky attitude of the author instantly got my attention. Plus the author lived in Florida! The soil from which I grew! It was a fun read, plus the workout was really simple and very effective. Soon, I started tuning in to the blog weekly, then daily for the awesome giveaways, information about fitness, and very do-able recipes. From this happenstance situation, the site linked me to other blogs, and other blogs, and OTHER blogs. Most of these bloggers had a core motivation of fun, food, and fitness and they were all inspiring, refreshing, and just plain cool! The more I tuned in, the more I learned. I learned about myself, my habits, fitness routines, career possibilities, and mostly the similarities we ALL had. It might seem dramatic to say fitness bloggers changed my life, but they have, and let me tell you how:

1. Portion Control

Seeing pictures of bloggers’ meals and their colorful, full-plates of vegetables, carbohydrates, and lean protein help me gauge my own meal amounts
2. Keeping Up with Working Out

I would lose my luster for working out, eat a couple cookies, and feel super guilty that I just “ruined” anything I worked hard for. Bloggers have exemplified that working out is a part of their lifestyle. They make sacrifices to workout and report of all the benefits they feel throughout the day. They are open to try new forms and fads of exercising and give a candid review of their experiences. It shows readers that trying new ways of invigorating your body is and can be fun! Plus, you never know who you might meet, a great friend or loved one might be at that next spin class with you.

3. Being Easy Going

Like Carrots N Cake’s Cookie Friday, or PB Fingers’ trip to Sanibel which caused a disrupt in her normal eating and exercise regime, the bloggers happily indulge and savor every bite and report back to us of their enjoyment, not their regret! When you can’t work out like normal, do what you can since an active lifestyle is just part of who you are and what you like. Get back to your old routine with a bang and eat yummy fruits and veggies to help you feel top-notch. How we get over our own little guilt trips is where the true health lies.
4. Having Friends Who Enjoy the Same Things You Do

The bloggers have met new people through exercise classes, and through the new people and their own ambition, have branched out and tried different activities with a positive attitude. They report back to us with their honest opinion, after giving it their best shot. They live active lifestyles and will run marathons and do other active things that help them stay happy, meet new friends, and even find a love they can also exercise with.
5. New Recipes

They EXPERIMENT! Trial and Error! And IT’S OKAY! Some recipes are successes! Some are duds. Some are super simple and delicious. Some teach you new culinary endeavors, and some are just old staples with some sparks of improvement.

6. Evolving

Seeing the daily updates and the changes fitness bloggers openly talk about shows how human we ALL are! They have shared their ever-growing families, personal struggles, births, deaths, birthdays and holidays. All of these memories are an open photo album they graciously share with readers and we see how they have grown. It’s sometimes refreshing to be able to relate to this aspect of all of our lives.

These 6 items really made an impact on me and I still follow these foundational bloggers daily if not weekly. It’s fun. It’s fresh. And it’s inspiring!

Have you been following any specific genre of bloggers? How have their blogs influenced you? Positively? Negatively?

We all have our interests… does that mean instant job?

We all have our interests. My interests range far from US Ambassador to Dietitian. All of these careers I’ve accepted are REALISTIC and DOABLE and every time I try something new, I have this urge that has me feeling like there’s something MORE I can be doing and I’m on this quest for that satisfying itch I can’t scratch. Why is this? Am I not living up to what I KNOW I can do better? Am I just getting bored easier than most people? What’s the “perfect” job for me? While perhaps I’m asking an unanswerable question, here are 7 ways to cope while you’re in this indefinite state:
1. Whatever it is you are doing now, DEVOTE yourself to it.

Do the job the BEST BEST BEEESSSSSST you can. It will give you experience, challenge you, make you work when you are not feeling up to it, and give you great letters of recommendation for when/ if you decide it’s time to leave.

2. Accept your place right here, right now.

(Watching the wooorld wake up from history…) where are you living? With whom are you living? What job do you have? At which grocery store do you shop? Where are you right now? You are there. And it’s okay. Actually, it’s more than okay- it’s perfect! Wherever you are right now ACCEPT it! That’s the first step to enjoying it and then taking it all in and making it all work in your favor! Living with your parents? Tell me about it! No really, ell me- start blogging, explore the many facets of your hometown. Write articles about your home for the local paper. Then, refer to #1- all of these activities will add up.
“When you realize how perfect everything is you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky.”- Tibetan quote.

3. Stop Researching.

All I freaking did was look up academic program after academic program. It was all too much. I became so enthralled at the thought of “me doing that” that I became disillusioned and a little disenchanted. Remember with everything there will be a bounty of hard work and classes you might just hate. These moments will make you ask yourself, “Is this all worth it?” that’s a harsh question. You already have the answer to your question, it takes an hour of solitude and internal tranquility so you can be vulnerably honest with yourself. “The choice is yours and yours alone.”- Olmec

4. Be positive.

If this is your blood type (B+), you’re already there (hyuck hyuck hyuck). Just, come on… yeah this job may really make your skin crawl, but it all stems from immersing yourself in this position and learning all you can about the jobs me yourself. Be an information leech. Suck this job dry and know it well. Learn some news things about it. Above all, work time is WORK TIME, completely avoid looking up different jobs, Facebook, school programs, etc. Unless this is accepted by your supervisor. Even still, show your rock star focus and concentration at work by keeping these pastimes to a minimum. Showing self control, especially in a professional setting, shows others the best qualities of your character. Plus, like a sword polisher, you are honing and sharpening these lifelong skills for that future career. This is all worth it. Promise.

5. Smile.

How underrated is this?! A smile completely alters your psyche for the day! Sitting and smiling may make you seem a little strange, but it’s face exercise. The more you work out these important facial muscles, the easier it is to keep them mobile and flexible. Smiles can look genuine, psychotic, pushy, sad, or goofy. Work out your smile. You’ll look awkward in pictures if you don’t.

6. Interview people in the profession you are curious about.

When I was in school I had one on ones with numerous professors. “How did you choose this? What are your interests? Do you like the job now? How has the job and field changed since you first entered?” all of these quizzical conversations were interviews for the lifestyle of the person in this career. A major sounds cool on paper, a job may sound enlightening in an ad, but when you’re a seasoned worker in the job, you have a treasure chest of knowledge no piece of paper can explain. Ask the professionals. See what their days are like. Do you want a family and children? How have they managed to have all this? College teaches you so much about your likes and limitations, but out of this academic bubble, there’s a nitty gritty world and the veterans in this world are the best teaching tools.

7. “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.” Bruce Lee, on his stages of learning.
How do we learn? According to Bruce Lee, we sit down with open ears and a closed mouth and DO the work. After a while we understand it enough to say this isn’t how I work, I am going to adjust it for my sake. Finally, can take years or decades, we have comprehended the material enough to add what is uniquely our own. We mold it and shape it so that we understand it and can relay it in our own way.

So, most of all, it’s all going to be okay. Devote your moments to the moment. Reduce the persistent, inculcating thinking and progress, naturally. Now, I must include this far too relevant disclaimer: “A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.” Hunter S. Thompson. When I say let it happen- DO SOMETHING and let the work happen. Please avoid sitting waiting for your break to come. Good things never come without hard work, but sometimes they come sooner than expected.

Check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook- always a good read and updated within the past 5 years. Here it gives the government statistics on Job descriptions, future outlook, requirements and more!

I show this to my students and I hope a few, or even ONE, will take advantage of the site and figure out their successful future.

Disillusionment and Why I Can’t Make Up My Mind

Today. Today is a great day, no doubt, but HOW in the world can we 20-somethings pick a major, stick with it or not stick with it, and dedicate their time and energy into this lifestyle? Is there something wrong with a person who can’t commit to a career? Am I yelling into an abyss about this?!?!

In my years in school- geez I’ve been in school for two decades… no wonder I have such disillusionment! I picked my major Anthropology because there was just something about the field that interested me and made my heart ‘pitter-patter’ (as one of my professors had put it) like no other major did. I dedicated my time toward figuring out what I wanted to do with this degree and it has led me on a silly trip of odd jobs and “experiences” that I will always remember. Okay, sure, of course I’ll rationalize that my post-college path was all meant for something, but it’s come to a point now where I’m like, “Get real!” Get real about the world and the responsibilities a grown adult is thrusted into. Hey, IT REALLY IS GREAT! So much freedom to explore and buy and sell and date and dance and sing! Okay, got a little fantastical there…

I’m not going to say I was given too many options, the world is FULL of options and a college degree is one niche of the cornucopia of choices (does anyone else have that vision of Donnie Steven from Even Stevens learning about the world cornucopia… remember those glasses cute Donnie wore?!) I think the young are just not realistic about how the world is to a 22 or 23 year old. The Bachelor’s degree is great! No doubt! It isn’t just a piece of paper that says, “Woohoo money well spent, now get a job.” It’s a marker of the determination and persistence a person committed to. The nights of struggle staying up late to hurriedly finish that 20-page paper or the miraculous way you shuffled your feet into class hungover from a night of wayyyy too much liquid courage, or the connections and friendships you learned to make from a whole new crew of people seemingly different from or conspicuously too alike to you, all of these in between aspects we had to learn to navigate was a marvelous learning experience that nothing else could teach us the way college did.

BUUuuuuuut, among all of is fabulousness and hype while in college, especially at a university, how do you know what you want to do? I surely didn’t. I had a student assistant job in the Anthropology Department and thought I saw a behind the scenes glimpse of the lifestyle of the professors- and I thought it was great! Now here in my Master’s program, I’m seeing the gritty side of academia. Maybe it has changed, maybe I have changed. But, by golly, it’s uneasy to alter your trajectory when you thought you had a plan! The world is open to do (almost) anything you want. As we get older, the options are there, but the trudge through the molasses to get there gets thicker and thicker. In a nutshell, it gets a little harder. But all in all. HOW DO YOU SETTLE ON A DEGREE AND A CAREER?

So how did you all pick your majors? Have you stuck with the major? Did you feel a compelling need to follow through with this career path? How DID you do it?!
